Trailer Poster.
Another aspect of my coursework is to create a poster for my teaser trailer. Following the analysis of the new Saw VI film, I have looked at some of the posters they have produced in order to advertise the film. The basic principle of a poster is a cheap and relatively easy way of further advertising a film. There can be many variations of a film poster, in terms of what they look like, for example they started off by having an image in the centre with the name of the film in large highlighted texts. They also tended to have the main actors names, the director, producer etc. However, in later years posters have become much more advanced because sometimes they include digital artwork and tend to not follow the same conventions as the average film poster. Personally, my favourite film posters are simple and modern, with very little writing apart from what is needed.
This poster in particular shows exactly what I meant by only having the essentials on the poster. You can clearly see the name of the film and the date that it is out, which in theory for such a blockbuster film as Saw is, is all is needed. When people see posters or advertisements for Saw they rarely look to see what actors are in it because all they really want to see is whether it is more gory and gruesome than the previous film. I think this is the beauty with picking a horror film because if you have disgusting pictures of blood and dead stuff on the poster or in the trailers then I think people tend to be happy.
I think what’s clever about this poster and what can be applied to other horror films is that you can use objects as lettering for example as this poster has done and used scissors to create the V, or you could use a chopped off finger to create an ‘I or 1’. This extra detailing can enhance the affect of the poster on the audience and generate an additional advertising feature. What I mean by this is that certain films are known for the font of their writing or symbols or images they use on their posters and in their trailers, for example The Ring, which is pretty self explanatory, but they use a ring as their advertising symbol.
